they are no good with reflective materials like flat heat press elements and the ONLY way to accurately measure a heat press is when its CLOSED , infra red thermometers are not supposed to be used...

you wont gvet an accurate measurement with the press OPEN the air temperatre and any movement will effect the reading, get a probe thermometer and measure iwth the press closed.
