    Sunday 24th Jan - Subli.co.uk website is down!

    Hi,

    Just to apologise to anyone who's trying to reach our website subli.co.uk today.

    We had a firewall issue a couple of weeks ago which caused the site to be down for a few hours, the host scheduled to re-start the server in the early hours of this morning to tie up loose ends, and as a result the site is not loading. They're not sure what they've done, but they're working on it now, and assure us they'll have it back online shortly.

    The frustrating thing is, we upgraded from inexpensive shared hosting, to dedicated cloud hosting with one of the UK's most reputable hosts, and we've had more problems since then, than we ever did previously!

    Anyway, hopefully we'll be back online within an hour or two.

    We did notice that and appreciate the note. There isn't really any difference between "shared hosting" and "dedicated cloud hosting" by the way as it sounds like you are still hosted on a server with other web sites that are probably bringing the same server down. "Dedicated Cloud Hosting" really means exactly the same as "shared hosting" but you can have a dedicated amount of RAM, Processor allocated to just your web site and own OS. This though means nothing if another web site goes tits up and starts to kill the same server. Or perhaps you are all behind the same firewall. The only real way to go (which isn't that expensive) is a dedicated managed server with own firewall so that no-one else can bring you down.     Thanks, we're back up now. I'm told our websites are the only ones on the server, it's not shared. It has it's own firewall too. It wasn't another site that brought it down, we had a problem with the firewall which is what caused the downtime a couple of weeks ago, this was scheduled work on the server in order to correct that, they scheduled a time to do it in the wee hours of the morning as it would mean some downtime, while doing that they messed up something to do with the IP addresses. It seems that although they have support staff 24/7, which is great, the over night and weekend staff are not quite as clued up and experienced, so basically we had to wait for the cavalry to arrive and figure out what the problem was.

    Sounds a decent set-up then you have. Perhaps some kind of DDOS attack? These seem to be becoming more regular at the moment especially for some of the very large retailers that our sister company www.onlineretailing.co.uk deals with. At least with your own firewall and 24/7 support it should be easily targeted and IP addresses blocked. Having dealt with server hosting companies for over 20 years for the e-commerce industry then highly recommend www.ukfast.co.uk if they are not the ones you already use! Olly

    Thanks Olly :-) No it appears just to be human error, maintenance was scheduled to fix a firewall issue, it was scheduled for very early Sunday morning when there'd be no one on the site, and whatever they did screwed it up, something to do with IP addresses being incorrect. It baffles me that it took them so long to fix it, as it doesn't seem it was actually that big a deal, it was just that the folk who were in yesterday couldn't figure it out.
