Noob Question, vector graphics print well, picture on mug looks sepia

    Hi folks,
I have a freesub ST210 press, epson wf2630 with dye sub ink, and Subli-Sharp paper & white Pix-Max mugs

my artwork was done in Inkscape

one side of the mug has Red and Black lettering which comes out bold red and bold black,

the photo on the other side of the mug, appears sort of sepia... which is not right!

I tried searching for answers with no success, any idea what I am doing wrong?

    I suspect it's a common gotcha!

    regards Joan

How many mugs did you try? Have you tried rotating a mug vertically through 180 degrees and pressing it (ie. upside-down) to eliminate uneven pressure or heat being the problem?

Also, are you printing with an ICC profile, and what brand of inks are you using?

Sublinova Smart dye Sublimation ink, from inkexpress
i have done three mugs so far, the first was a picture of my motorcycle, printed twice in opposite directions which wrapped around the whole mug and came out sort of sepia with very dark blue where the bike should be. bike is supposed to be a lighter metalic blue I know metalic wont show...

no i haven't tried re orienting the mug with the base to the left... but the first print probably covered that anyway

the second and third mugs were mixed photo and vector graphics to see if that made a difference, the vector graphics are nice and bold, the different picture is sepia with red tints...

no I didn't have the ICC Profile loaded, the supplier told me how to load it in photoshop, but i dont have photoshop, i looked in the printer setup, but couldn't find a way to load the profile. last night I looked at the cd that the ICC profile came on, and noted the profile could be loaded on it's own....
so I have loaded it, but have no idea where it's gone... or how to use it...

I am hoping it has magically associated itself with the correct printer.

but I am a Noob, and a touch naieve in this specialism at the moment

    regards Joan

An ICC profile has to be loaded into your graphics software (Inkscape, in your case) and the software must be told to use it to manage colour when printing. Your printer driver should also be set to NOT manage colour and allow the graphics software to do it. If you have the correct profile for your printer/ink combination then colours should start printing correctly.

Not all graphics software allows use of an ICC. Photoshop does, as does Corel, and Inkscape too but I think it's more involved setting it up with Inkscape.

If you are planning on sublimation as a business then I'd seriously suggest using Photoshop or Corel, and although you could still design in Inkscape, if that's what you're used to, you could print the designs from the other software.

I might add that I don't use Epsons for sublimation and have read somewhere that it's possible to obtain decent prints by tweaking the settings rather than using an ICC, but I can't help you with that.

    Thanks Webtrekker,
I am doing voluntary work, so investment in software is difficult

I will look at inkscape again

when you go to print try using the printer set up more options.

Then on colour correction select custom and then select advanced and then no colour adjustment.

Sometimes automatic selection will fade things out a bit. Or you could try photo enhance on the advanced settings to try and boost colour vibrancy.

That said the replacement of colour on your bike with dark blue does tend to suggest a possible blocked head, have you tried printing out a nozzle check to make sure all colours are coming through? I note you are using a WorkForce printer and I always had problems with yellow not coming through correctly.

I work my files in Illustrator and Photoshop but print them in another computer with Inkscape. YOU DO NEED the profile thats right with your Ink and when you open your file in Inkscape go to - File - Document Properties- Color Management - Available Color Profiles and Choose the Right Profile for your Ink and Add. Then go to Print - Advanced - Color Profile - OFF. This should do it. But you have to have the right Profile.

Hi folks, I did a nozzle check and all colours seem to come through.

also added a colour profile in Inkscape. but it didn't seem to make any difference...

I shall have to keep playing.

is there an inexpensive way to see the sublimated colour rendition?
can i repeatedly print new sections onto a single mug after changing the colour settings and moving the image onto a blank section of the mug, or will repeated heating, denature the coating?
    regards Joan
