If you've used the printer until the ink has drained dry, then you're in serious risk of a major printhead block - either caused by an air bubble, or by drying ink.

Epson printers are designed to always have ink at the printhead. Without that, you could be heading towards a world of hurt.

And the reason why I use Brother printers.

But neither Ricoh or Brother are immune from the issue. It's just that, unlike most common Epson printers, the ink cartridges on Ricoh and Brother printers are remote from the printhead. You could still run the printhead dry and cause the same problem as on an Epson, but it's much less likely with remote mounted cartridges because there should always be ink in the line between the cartridge and the printhead.

Of course, the downside to remote mounted cartridges is that you have to flush the whole ink line if you want to change ink types - resulting in a more expensive waste of ink compared to an Epson which just needs to flush the tiny bit at the printhead.

    It's swings and roundabouts.
