    Social Media

So ive just decided i really should up my game as respects to social media , Now facebook is a given and can be straight forward (ish) i still managed to create differnt pages mainly because i couldnt decide what is and what isnt a suitable page for business, is it just a like page a group page where you can add friends ??? think i got it sorted but bloody hell !
Twitter .... what a mine field half the time i have no idea what part of twitter im on i send regular inain tweets but its not as easy as youd think to think of something short to say and what the bloody hell is a #tag anyway well i think i know but for the life of me i cant see how it helps .
so then i put google anylitics on my site now that was scary i thought i had more visitors than that !!! what on earth half the info on their means god only knows but that then led me to google+ and i find myself once again sayin what the hell!! so in short my days are spent facebooking then tweeting then googling then anylising not sure if i should be proud or go see a doctor!! and at some point i might even get some work done
For those of you just getting into this good luck you'll need it and if anyone has any tips they can convey in lay mans terms please feel free to let me know

Can't speak for everyone, obviously, but I'll tell you my thoughts on social media both from a personal perspective and from the point of view of a guy who has hundreds of web clients.

Personally... I run a website which has close to 200,000 uniques per month, every month. The site has twitter and Facebook 'join' buttons in a prominent position, and every article has 'share' options so there's really no way that anyone who participates in social media could miss the opportunity to share. We've had our twitter account for more than four years, and a Facebook page for more than three years. We post several times every day on twitter and once on Facebook (unless there's something else that needs said) but we always time our posts/tweets to catch people who are just about to start work in the UK so that they're likely at their desk meandering around rather than working. Even if we're giving away something amazing like an exclusive video game box set, we'll likely only get 50-100 interactions on twitter and on Facebook we'll likely get none whatsoever. In my personal experience, Facebook is for personal stuff and twitter CAN work for business but it's mostly just a global chatroom full of idiots who want to tell you that they've just farted.

From a client perspective, it's not that much different. I have clients making in excess of £200,000 per month through the stores that I've built for them, so they've got MILLIONS of registered customers... yet their twitter accounts maybe have 5000 followers if they're lucky, and their Facebook pages are usually half that. The interactions are practically nil, and when they run promotions through twitter or Facebook they tend to actually LOSE followers rather than gain new ones. They've asked me what they're doing wrong, and the only thing I can really say to them is that a) they're not a celebrity and b) they're not buying enough interactions... so if they were giving away a car, they'd get a LOT of interactions, but giving away the chance to win a £50 voucher generally has folk not caring too much.

I've been in the web industry for just shy of eighteen years and still don't understand the best way to approach social media. It's a minefield. Sometimes it'll work, sometimes it won't. It never has for me.

I have two comments but will precede those comments with the fact that a) I do not have a website and b) I do not know anything about Social Media....

Firstly, I think you can now get apps or programs that will upload your social media content to all the places you are registered with in one go. This should save you a bit of time because you only need to type and upload once (you forgot Pinterest LOL)!

Secondly, there are social media experts out there who will run your sites for you, personally I would choose the small independent freelancer as you are less likely to fall fowl of the paid for likes, as Artygamer says, there are specific times to target a specific audience and the specialists will know this, the same way some demographics use Twitter more than FB and vice versa.

Lastly, I do know that Universal Music Group were looking for a social media specialist not long ago, starting salary was 70k so it is a fair assumption its quite a specialist job.
