I want to update my other Windows 7 machine to boot the operating system with an SSD drive.

The Kingston 240Gb SSDs are really cheap at the moment, so a nice upgrade.

My question; is it possible to clone a 500Gb drive onto a smaller 240Gb SSD? There won't be 500GB worth of data being transferred obviously. I'm just wondering if the software can handle smaller volumes?

What software would you recommend to clone the drive?

Have you got a 3rd drive as easy to use win7 backup to 3rd drive (making a system backup) then crate a boot cd and restore on to SSD drive I have done it many a time

I use DriveClone11 by Farstone. I can't remember if there might be an issue cloning to a smaller drive but pretty sure this software can handle it.

I use Acronis every time. Lets you clone a drive no matter what size and to any size, bigger or smaller than the one that you have come from.

Just done mine too. Used Acronis as it was cloned and installed by a computer shop. Bought a One Terrabit Crucial SSD for 154€. Now the computer works a million times faster.
Acronis seems to be the industry go to software for cloning.
