Hello,

my girlfriend's job is ending in a few months and she has the option to buy very cheaply one of the A3 printers in her office. They have a 1400 & 1900 epson. We're thinking of one of these for our small business to use with durabright inks for things like transfer printing, as we're going to buy a ricoh for dyesub work as we're only small and part time, doing small batches every week or two at the moment and don't want to deal with clogging print heads.

Would you recommend one over the other?

Thanks,

Justin.

I never had ricoh but what others say is ricoh clogging from time to time as well. What I would do is if printers are cheap I would buy two of them. (one as a back up). so I would go for A3 printer and ciss.

Regarding profiles etc and what other people use I would say the 1400.

The Photo 1400 doesn't use durabrite inks. I think (but would need to double check) that the R1900 does use durabrite, but this printer has a wierd combination of colours (including orange). If you want a cheap printer for using durabrite inks you may as well get a cheap S22 or SX215 (£40 +) as these would be fine for that purpose.

The Epson 1900 uses Ultrachrome Hi-Gloss2 pigment inks while the Epson 1400 uses Claria dye inks.

If you just want Durabrite inks, there are cheaper printers out there as Martin says.

If you want A3, then I'm fairly sure the cheaper Epson B1100 uses Durabrite inks - although you should check the specs before you buy just to be sure.

Couldn't you use refillable carts and stick Durabrite in?.

(a) you can't buy genuine durabrite ink to refill and (b) if you put a pigmented ink in a printer designed for dye based ink then it will clog almost immediately. For around £40 for an S22 printer with a full set of genuine durabrite cartridges then I wouldn't bother with the other printers - it will cost you more than that just for the inks.
