Hi Mugsman,

This may not be as bad as you think, it also depends on the pixel resolution of the image, not just the dpi.

Your photo can still have a screen resolution of 72dpi AND be hi-res, for example

6x4inch at 300 dpi and 25x16.6inch at 72dpi are both same resolution images i.e. around 1800x1200 pixels it depends if the proper size info was saved with your image.

If your image has been saved at for example 6x4inch AND 72dpi, then that is a very poor image, the pixel resolution would be around 432 x 288 pixels, also bear in mind you may have just been sent that as a proof for your approval.

Hope this helps anyway

As FlyingAl says, the DPI is dependent on the size you want to print.

It's also likely that the photographer doesn't want to just give away high-quality copies of the photos by email because they sell printed products of their own and they would want to make it as difficult as possible for others to infringe their copyright.

as you can see it clear the quality is diabolical and on the last one they cut her head off lol
thanks for info
first pic is 818 KB 72DPI second pic is 3.42 MB 300DPI

Did you buy these, as normally you have to buy a hard copy only - quite surprised they have even emailed you them.

hi,

yes, these are all low quality FOR PRINT, like JSR says, I too would be very surprised if the photographer emailed you the full 300dpi hires images.

I checked out 9863b9d40dhir.jpg, the pixel resolution is 951x1189 pixels, if you were to PRINT this image at 300dpi, the image size on paper would be approx 3.17inch x 3.96inch, so yes, they are small for print so I'm still inclined to think these are just proofs. Printing this image on paper at 72dpi would give you an image size of 13.2inch x 16.5inch but would look poor on paper.

I couldn't see any image there that was 3.42MB, those 3 images vary between 85kb and 90kb small compressed jpgs. The aspect ratio of each one is different, maybe the photographer is just be showing you a variety of cropping options, including the 'head-chop' :)

cheers

I get mine from Tempest on disc, and I must say, the quality is fabby.

In fact, I think I got a previous one by email and the quality was really high on that aswell, will go search for it and see what size it is

Got this info from the piccy they emailed me

I've printed it on a mug and it's came out great, even though it only has a dpi of 42

Hi Kaz,

looks like the images you have from Tempest are around double the resolution of mugsmans!!!!

I'm sure mugsmans images would still look great on a mug, just not on anything much larger.

Hi Mugsman,

aaaah, it looks like a little light is being shed on the problem here, it does indeed look as if the forum is affecting the size of the images you've posted.

The image 9863b9d40dhir.jpg when downloaded from the forum is coming in at just 951x1189pixels, whereas looking at your latest post the true size of the image on your own PC is 2400x3000pixels, a much healthier resolution :) which equates to a true 8x10inch print at 300dpi.

You can rest easy mugsman, all is well, all my calculations have been based on the forum compressed images :)

sleep well

thanks for that Alan so conclusion is never buy a download from tempest as the print they send MIGHT not be the propper DPI lol and not a image that you can print anybigger than 8 x 10 in my case with out losing any quality
