I would like to do some straight forward templates ( Squares oblongs ect ). I would like to various squares sizes but I would like to do it like in the style of a shield template that martin has on his web, ( so when I put a design on like the shields or coaster it's underneath . An the only thing you can see is the shape. Hope this makes sense.

I have been playing with photo shop, this is how I've done my templates is it right and will it print white. first I did a transparent layer a bigger size than. I required then I did another layer use the paint bucket to white the cut out out the size I required on the white layer so I can see through to the transparent layer where I slide a picture though so you only print what comes through the cut. Will the white print, I tried to this in another layer but it would let me cut as there so no pixels picked. For the cut I used the marquee tool. Hope this makes sense.
you can not print white as you dont have a white ink :)

Could you do a pdf - that may bring the file size down.

If I understand you, you want a template like this for example http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRTQgiVNCr70jvULVWeGtG_fjN6GzRzM COvwZjXfc1bjmr2qgwDlQ but then you bring in a square image to go underneath but you only want it to print the template outline of the image and not whats outside the template??

sorry I knew that i would mislead everybody with my poor example and chose of crap descriptions. I have various sizes of metal that I wish to print on. The coaster with a layer that you can see the shape and size. I really sorry I know this makes no sense if fact worse.
tell me the sample sizes and i will tell you step by step how to cut the shapes in the layers in ps.
hope this will help you a little :)

Thank you Paul, I will have a play tomorrow , to night I have to unpick a embroidery polo that's gone wrong, it will all take all night, have to do it order due in tomorrow at noon. Plus the dam picker is blunt. I understand the principal of the template, but if your looking to a set size how does it work then. Once again thank you

Thanks Paul I was up at 6 this morning trying, I did it, I had trouble making a perfect circle but I'm sure that will come with practice. I put the grid on the template so I could cut a 4 by 4 square
for a circle I shall draw around the item then use the tool. I'm very sure that I will not be the only one using your video to learn Many many thanks Jenny
For perfect circle in photoshop hold shift while making circle. This way wont go oval.
