I did this yesterday and from what I can remember,

1. You get the invite from Paul and click on it.
2. You then visit the link and have to register for an account (it's free but you need an account to use the services)
3. Once you have an account you're then directed to download the dropbox software - you need the software to use the services (choose the *FREE option)
4. Once dowloaded you'll then have a folder installed on your PC which is your own dropbox account (make sure you choose the FREE option when registering) and also a folder called DSF that Paul created.
5. The folder then syncs so you can see what's in it (may take a few minutes depending on your connection).
6. Once synced, anything that Paul puts in the folder will show up in your folder and you have an icon near the clock on your PC (bottom right) that pops up a balloon when new stuff has been added (not sure what it looks like on a Mac).

As I said, did it yesterday and it works great. Dropbox is 100% safe and will be very popular as it's a great app to have an online (cloud) folder that you can access from any PC and have shared folders like the DSF one that Paul has created.

Well done Paul - looks like a great asset to the forum :-)

*FREE option of the account gives you about 2gb of space to use. If you need more (who needs more?) then you pay the extra to get more - most people will get by with the free amount of space.

So how do you sync with Pauls DSF folder if you are already registered?

Paul

Cant you see dsf folder in your dropbox? Also in your online one? Did you instal it from my link or email invitation???

I think the whole idea of the drop box is a great idea, but can I just ask a couple of questions about how this is controlled.

From what I see about this folder, the entire contents are downloaded and synced with everyone else who has access. If anyone adds/changes the contents of the folder or adds new sub folders then these are automatically populated to everyone else in the shared group. That sounds a good idea. So any member could add a template, image or whatever (and I mean whatever) to the DSF folder and everyone else would have that downloaded - therein lies a potential problem of such open sharing.

But it also looks like anyone can share this folder with anyone else, so the control of who has access to this shared resource is now potentially in the public domain (certainly not restricted to DSF members). So how is this controlled? Any member could share the folder with any other email address and that recipient could share it with anyone else. Who sees this folder or who has access to it is not controlled by Paul, but everyone has the opportunity to share it with anyone else. Is that the intention of this? It strikes me that such resources ought to be in a private section on the DSF forum which is accessible by premium members rather than giving all these resources freely to anyone and everyone (which is now a possibility).

So before the drop box feature gets too much in the DSF/ public domain I think there ought to be some reflection on where this might go and is everyone happy with this (mods, admin, others for comments)?

Fair point this!

I did think that Paul had total access and control to the invite system but after reading the guidelines .....

"Anyone you’ve invited to a folder can then invite others to join the folder"
"Anyone you’ve invited to a folder can then add, delete or change files within that folder"

?

ummmm!

Some bloody good points there martin.
But all i.want to do is have a look on each added file and if there will be any copy right brake i will delete it in seconds. Also i would preffer if dsf members would be fair and donot share this folder with outside word. If this will happen i wont be adding any new stuff there and simply delete folder. Dsf folder is not public. Is shared and can be deleted by me anny time. Also any other person not reffered by me can be kicked out by my and only me so iam the admin. Also if there is any person joining the folder i know about this in seconds. :-)

I just wanted to raise the issues. It's up to the admin & mods to determine if this is the best route to go - just for me to play devils advocate. Any member who has the DSF folder could now simply create a new share and bypass Paul. Paul would only know of members who join the original group. Anyway, it's your decision.

As there is little in the way of premium membership over no membership at present then I thought this resource could offer some value added and encourage more members to pay and reap the rewards. Does the forum set up not permit file sharing along the same lines as drop box in a 'premium only members' section?

dsf folder has no much to do with the forum. its only named like this so people know. This is only simple present from me to others. thats all...

thats true. but if people will spread the word then they wont be a competition as every one will have those frames. so better keep it secret lol ;)

or is it better idea to share this folder for couple of days and then delete it?? and share again when new stuff will come?? but this way you wont know about them instantly :/

opinions, opinions....

Oh, I assumed that as the mod of the forum that this was something do to with the forum, especially as it was named as DSF as well. If it's nothing to do with the forum then that's an entirely different matter then. Share as you wish then :)

I use Dropbox a lot, and I would have posted sooner if I'd been able to access the forum for the last week.

Using a "shared folder" is problemmatic because (i) users must sign up to Dropbox, (ii) anyone can put any file in the folder - including viruses! (do you trust *everyone*?), (iii) anyone can delete the files in it - thus denying everyone else access to the files.

A shared folder should only be used between people you trust implicitly 100%. We're not just talking about whether Paul trusts them enough to give them access to the shared folder because, as soon as a new person is given access that person has access to the folder on *everyone's* computer who's already sharing. Everyone involved needs to trust everyone else who is or may ever be involved 100%. I don't know about you but, when it comes to thoughts of security, giving complete strangers access to a folder on my computer gives me the heebie-jeebies.

A better option is to put the files in your Dropbox's "Public" folder, and then post the "Public link" to the forum (or given to people on request). This way, the recipient doesn't have to sign up to Dropbox, they can't delete the file, and they can't upload other files to everyone else's computer. The original file(s) remain under Paul's control at all times (copies taken by others are out of his control, but they would be anyway).

I use Dropbox a lot, and I pay for the monthly version, so I'm certainly not against the Dropbox principle - but there are different ways of using it. Sharing folders with people you don't really know is not a good security practice.
