If anybody has any useful tips for a complete novice in this field please share.

Will get it set up tomorrow and look forward to giving it a go

it includes

1 x Tutorial DVD (PC / MAC) containing video tutorial, cutting templates and examples

so i suggest before you plug anything in a cup of tea/coffee and have a good watch, also google is your friend,

cut simple to start as its easy to set up the machine and cut small, than waste mtrs of vinyl. make sure vinyl is right way up (clear carrier sheet is on the bottom) and image is mirrored - unless cutting vehicle vinyl in which case image is non-mirrored.

I have brought one, a couple of weeks ago, I haven't had time to get my head around it yet, hoping to find some one near me that I can pay to show me how, not enough time at the present to learn from Google, but I image thats what I'm going to have to do as all the craft people I know use a different machine, I suppose I could advertise for someone

Very impressive, easy to set up and easy to use.
After half an hour messing about with it getting the vinyl on the mat the right way and mirroring text ect I soon made
a quick tee with text and an image.

You don't need the cutting mat for vinyl

I would love to do that but at this time and moment and till the summer I'm tied up learning something else, but I've always wanted to learn to use a cutter, glad your getting on pity you didn't live close I pay for lesson. But it will have to wait, My husband has 6 weeks leave and that's when I intend to sit and be a you tube watcher. What forum would you recommend

I don't think I would be up to giving lessons out yet after 1 T shirt.
Watch the instructional dvd that comes with it,I was surprised I was able to
do it without hours of cocking it up tbh.
Theres a couple of posts in these forums somewhere all saying good things about it and if you you tube cameo/craft robo theres
a few quick vids on there.

Hello
I've recently joined the forum and as an embroiderer, I can't believe I've not come across it before! Anyhow, I've had my cameo a couple of weeks and love it. I've made a few test cuts including a few vinyl logos and am really pleased with the results. The Studio software is straightforward although I'm not using the most up to date version because it caused problems with my computer.

Jennywren, there are forums out there but they tend to be scrapbooking ones. They do offer some useful hints & tips though.

Considering getting one of these, more for making paper props for photoshoots such as kids names etc - when using card how long can you make it?

I would guess for card, the longest would be 12x24". For this you would need to buy the optional 12x24 cutting mat. Vinyl can be much longer because this doesn't need a cutting mat.

cool - just assumed as they market it as a3 the cutting mat supplied would fit it, but see its only 12 by 12.

Yes, it is only the 12" square mat that is supplied. I believe the 12x24 mat is a fairly recent introduction because the software was only updated in Feb of this year to accommodate it.

Great, thanks!

I want to play about with vinyl too, i assume the vinyl thats 500mm wide can be cut to fit on the cameo right?

Yes, I've been buying 20" wide vinyl and then cut it down to the size I need. Some people really hate working with heat transfer vinyl, but as a beginner, I'm enjoying the learning curve and I'm loving the results too!

I really want one of these - I am borrowing the big graphtec from my partner's business but then they curse when it's 140 miles away and they want a sign ...
but because I am a BIG impulse buyer (and just can't afford another dust gatherer) - anyone want to give me any down sides?

Hhhmm downsides? Just one really and that is the well-known problem with the blades' ratchet design. Currently it can easily clog up with waste bits of material which are very difficult to remove, but there are very strong rumours that the blade housing is being redesigned, so watch this space!
