Ceramic Money Box Supplier Recommendations Please

Hi everyone

I've searched the forum for money box suppliers and old threads suggest BMS.

However, I bought a box of 12 a couple of months ago from BMS and only just got around to experimenting with them today.
The batch I've got has quite a few problems:

- different sizes
- rough tops and bottoms
- mottled sort of white - not pure white
- really messy looking plugs
- barrelled bottoms

which is quite a lot considering I've only got 12 (!) and as such I'm getting very variable prints on them using both a mug press and an oven.
Some are fading at the bottom due to the barreling so out of 12 I've made I've only got 7 which are in a sellable quality.
(Other threads mentioned problems with cracking which I haven't had using either the press or the oven so that's a plus point!)

I've had them too long to raise the issue with BMS so I just wondered if there's a better alternative supplier for these?
Or do you think as it was a small 12 pack then they are rejects for experimenting with and that a full case order for 36 would be better quality?

Just for info:
Mug press: 170C for 140 sec. Results: 3 x perfect / 2 x ok-ish / 3 x faded
Oven: 175C 20mins. Results: 2 x perfect / 2 x faded

I stopped doing them after our first lot as they were just as you describe size and finish wise, it is a shame as once they are printed they look great.

It amazes me that it's us, the end user who become the quality control inspector. How many people thought these shoddy blanks were ok to sell?

We dropped them as well, awful things.

There seems to be some pretty decent finished ones for those selling on Not On The High Street, Etsy, etc... so I'm wondering now how they're doing it or where they're getting their supplies from.

(Unless, of course, they're not really bothered by the awful finish!)

I've bought them in the past and had really great results when buying from Novachrome.

Expensive compared to some suppliers but excellent quality.

I would imagine that a lot of them are selling what they have, and unless someone complains they just carry on selling.

Had these from 2 different suppliers - absolute rubbish! Too many faults to mention. I wouldn't sell anything that didn't produce consistent results. You'll be tearing your hair out if you ever get a decent sized order to make.

I'm sorry you have had problems with money boxes but it seems to me that they are generally awful quality. I purchased 18 from a supplier and almost all cracked across either side of the slot, absolute rubbish. I ordered from another well known company and they arrived with the same problem you have, slots not in the centre, some wide slots, some narrow etc. etc. I could go on. At least I got a refund from the last company.

I gave up after that, not worth all the hassle or risk!

I'm probably going to regret it but I've just spoken to Nova Chrome (as per Customprintwales comment that they had good results) and managed to order a sample set to try out rather than a full case of 36.

I figured trying just one more supplier might be worth a go before I give up too!
I'll report back on the results and if they're equally duff then I'll at least know to give up looking for alternatives and move on to something else!

Well if its any help my two orders were not from Nova Chrome so you might be lucky!

I don't think these people appreciate how much time and effort goes into creating the designs and templates to use not to mention advertising blurb. :mad:

That's good to know Flowers06! They're being delivered today so I'll have a play later on and will post results just in case anyone else is interested (or it will at least save anyone else wasting money on these things!!)

Not sure if it's any use to you but I did mine with a wrap and in the oven.

I got reasonable results using a mug press at 180C for 180 seconds but I got better results in an oven. Remember with a money box you have two big heat sinks - top and bottom - that will draw heat away from the top and bottom of the sides which can impact the result if you don't allow for it.

The results are in!

Had a quick test with the Nova Chrome batch last night and goodness me what a difference!

They came boxed individually which is always a bonus but this may just be because I got a sample set of 12 so I'm not sure if they are boxed individually on a full case of 36.

Pic below to compare the two batches I've had. On the left side the BMS ones and on the right side the Nova Chrome ones.

Both done in Freesub ST-210 double mug press at 170C for 140 secs.

Hope this is helpful for anyone else looking to do money boxes.

The normal 36 also come individually boxed ( or did last time I bought them)

If you are worried about the bottom of the money box do what I did. Pop down to Wilko's and buy a roll of table protector tabs. I think 100 costs about £1.95. you need 3 per money box.

Thanks for the follow-up. There seems to be a world of difference between the two money boxes.

Just like to say though that normally, in posts of this nature, you get the usual suppliers jumpimg in and offering their wares. In this case, their silence speaks volumes about the general quality of money boxes.
