We've had no problems with our RICOH A4 SG 3110DN using SubliJet-R® inks, its worked well for us.
I think your exactly right about the mugs, we had about the same amount that also couldn't use. Now spending that bit more to achieve the quality we are after.

Printing through photoshop with an RGB image using sg_SG3110DN_RGB_sjr_classic_v1.0 gave no grey background and the colours were close but not as good as the PC print.
