    XP laptop and wireless adaptor

I just bought a wireless adaptor for my XP laptop it installed ok and the laptop tells me at the wireless icon at the bottom left of the screen that I am connected to Sky and signal strength is excellent but when I log on to internet explorer it says this page cannot be displayed.......anyone have any idea of what's wrong, I have a variety of software that won't run on my 8.1 laptop I've tried the part where it says it can run older programmes but it doesn't seem to work

    Thaks Bob

Have you tried it with another browser, eg. Firefox? IE is a waste of space on XP machines as hardly any sites support those old versions now.

As for compatibility problems on your W8.1 machine, try running your older stuff in a Virtual Machine (eg. VirtualBox or Oracle).

I think I have something similar. My second computer keeps saying to me that dns server is unavailable. Any suggestions?

When it shows you are connected goto the start button and then run.

    Type "cmd" and press enter

It will show you a black msdos screen. Type "ipconfig" and see if any of the results show you your laptop has been assigned an ip address by the router.

If not I would try unintalling the drivers and reinstalling the device. If it has then go to your web browser and type in the router ip address. So for example mine on my router is 192.168.1.254.

Most are 192.168.1.1 or something similar.

That should load up an info screen and at least tell you if you laptop is working on your network, just with no internet access yet. You may need to enter a username and password for the router. That will either be admin and admin or it may be printed on the back of your router itself.

    Hope that helps.
    Alex.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for your adapter. While reinstalling, DO NOT click on 'yes' or 'ok' if asked to install any software programs, just indtall the drivers.

Thank you so much for your help!
It worked BUT only for a period of time. I repeated all the actions but nothing has changed after the second trial... Any suggestions?

Thanks once more for your advice.

The actions I described? Or did you just reinstall the driver as webtrekker said. If you followed my directions does it still let you connect to the router by typing in the router ip address into your browser. i.e. 192.168.1.254

If this connected but still doesn't let you connect to the network then try:

Start/Run and type in "cmd" again.

    Then type "ipconfig /renew"

Test the connection and see if it works, if it does does this last any longer or does it drop out again after a short time?

    Alex.
