Changes to fees chargeable on card payments

This may affect some of you as both customers and as purchasers, but as of 13th Jan, companies are no longer allowed to impose a surcharge for using particular cards. As I understand it an 'admin' fee across ALL methods of payment may be allowable but there now cannot be a charge for certain cards (eg credit cards). I know there are some suppliers who have previously had surcharges in place for credit card/paypal but not for debit cards, so it is worth checking with them when you next purchase.

All that is happening is that some firms are just rising their prices! We have one shop near us, now won't take credit/debit cards at all, but have installed their own ATM which chrges £1.50 for every withdrawal!

I recon what will happen is that these firms will now call it a "handling charge" or whatever to cover the same charges that they stacked onto credit card payments. Same thing, just different text.
We can probably thanks the likes of RyanAir and such like. When we look for a ticket to wherever , Ryanair will probably be the cheapest on a search, but after you have fought through their system the price is loaded with so many extras that its more expensive than the others.

My thoughts right now is how many firms and self employed will be caught up in the Carillion crash. I hope nobody on here has been supplying t-shirts to them or their contractors and waiting for payment....

They can charge a "handling" or "admin" charge, but can't just apply it to card payments, would have to be across the board.

Just Eat have added a 50p service charge to all orders, on top of the large percentage they take from the food charge.
