    Made in Britain

I know there's been a couple of posts before on the subject, but the attachment should hopefully clear up the confusion. This company takes their definition from the Trading Standards definition of 'substantial change' before being allowed to say Made in Britain.

we come up against this all the time with certain items we sell, one company quoted one of our customers for a "made in the UK" product, when we pointed this out to our customer, we still got the order.

In the UK then you can say "Made in Britain" if the majority of work for an end product is done in the UK. When it comes to mugs then the process of designing artwork, printing, sublimating and packaging is a longer process than making the blank for us - personally. The UK is very vague I agree and it is rare for us to use "Made in Britain" so like most others we say "Printed in Britain".

On the video they gave lots of examples, but the rule of thumb is, if the product left China as a mug and it's still a mug when you sell it, then it is made in China no matter how much time you spend adding a surface pattern or working on it.

but if the work done to the product adds a significant change or adds significant value, then it can be said to be Made In UK ... a mug bought for 50p which can then be sold for £10 due to the printed artwork/packaging.

If you buy a cushion from Turkey, stitch your own label on it and add a surface pattern, it is 'Made in Turkey'.

If you buy cushion material from Turkey, a zip from China, a cushion inner from Turkey. Then sew, stitch, add a zip, add a surface pattern here in the UK, then it is 'Made in the UK'. Because it wasn't a cushion when it left Turkey or China.

    I'll look for the video.
