I would look at the Brother because it comes with some ( I think) built in fonts and ability to make text. It might also come with some small designs and if you are lucky , the PES software so you can make some designs yourself.
I might be wrong but I dont think the Ricoma comes with built in design software so you will end up having to buy some sort of digitising program and that is not cheap.
Check with the supplier first as Ive not looked at either machine since 2007.

I would certainly look at brother pr series for semi domestic. I’ve got a pr655 which I started with. Absolutely love it.

Tajima have this SAI machine which is aimed at the home arena from a size prospective. The internals are actually the same as their industrial targeting machines it's just a detuned in speed and number of colours. https://www.tajimauk.co.uk/tajima-sai/

We use the PR655 but will be upgrading in the very near future due to increased workload, never had a days problem with the brother but we are now looking at a twin head Merlin, for speed alone.

We had our Brother PR670e installed a few weeks ago! Haven't had much chance to use it yet. However the speed & output is super high quality.

Maintenance is easy with just a drop of oil on the hook everyday you use the machine.

We have the Brother PR670E. Its great everyone loves it and as someone has already said it has touch screen so can just type text and it will stitch it. It also comes with pes software so you can design your own stuff. simple to use and just needs a drop of oil daily.

Do you use the PE Design 11 software with your Brother PR670e Fletcher?

I'm not really enjoying the software, How are you finding it?

I think embroidery is a pretty mature and stable technology and they are much similar.
If starting up, what you really need is training / support so you understand what you are doing, how to handle different fabrics and types of designs etc.
Software choice is also really important, - to Wilcom or to not Wilcom ...that is the question !
