    Help! Laptop going mad!

My wife's Lenove Ideapad is playing up.

Whilst typing, the cursor jumps and starts to randomly place the letters between words in the previous lines. This is causing great problems as you can imagine.

I've cleaned the trackpad and made sure she isn't touching it as she types. Also, I've checked and she has the latest drivers installed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Might be due to a virus or malware.

Thanks for the response. Sorry, I should have mentioned that she ran Malwarebytes and McAfee runs every day.

Personally I'd never use McAfee for anything, causes more problems than it helps.

Will have a hunt see if I can find any advice.

    Possibly useful.

Can you add external mouse as a test? Does this happen in all apps? What version of Windows?

    It's Windows 10.

We did try attaching a remote mouse and keyboard.

We found the typing was OK using the remote keyboard, but as soon as my wife went back to laptop keyboard the random cursor jumping started again.

Went into Windows settings (the little cog) and changed the touchpad device settings to low sensitivity and heavy touch.

This seemed to resolve the issue BUT: suddenly random keyboard shortcuts occurred, for example, typing capital W made the word IN.
Capital Z was WITH. About 6 keys were affected, only if these capitals were typed at the beginning of a line, not in the middle.

Thought this might be to do with the new settings, so went back and amended the settings to Medium Sensitivity and Light Touch (as they were before all this started).

Still had the problem with the keyboard shortcuts, went into time & language and tried to change the language from English (US) to English (UK) in the language part. This proved difficult, although all the other language settings were set to English (UK) including the keyboard settings.

At this point, decided to do a restart. So far, lo and behold, both problems sorted. Don't know if we should have done restarts after resetting each step. But the settings are back exactly how they used to be, restart is done, and so far so good, all back to normal! Phew!!

    Thanks again for the resposes,

    Ray

Reboot can solve a multitude of issues. Tech Support first question, "Have you tried a reboot?"! lol.

Seriously though, always a good idea to reboot when you've made even a simple change.

True, we had done a couple of reboots though but it seems not at the right point in the proceedings!

    Thanks,
