    Large Format Printer Advice

Well our Epson 7800's are dying on their feet and I might have no choice but to sadly say goodbye to them with refurbished models as rare as hens teeth.

What do others use for large format printing (ideally 24") and can they use sublinova smart ink?

I know there is the Epson SC-F500 but presume I would be locked into Epson inks and also only 4 colour whereas currently have 10 colour.

Hoping someone can help as now have two dead 7800's on our unit floor...

We're buying another 44" Epson 6 colour, there are 44" 4 colour printers available for not much money. Ink costs are very reasonable on these.

Forget the F500, quick search on here will tell you why.

VJ628 is a fantastic machine and can be up to 8 colour. Print is outstanding but not particularly quick. You're tied into Sawgrass for the inks which is a big drawback but again costs aren't too bad.

Thank you Justin. I'm not too keen on 4 colour as I print for artists and going back from 8 colour will make a big difference. Oddly I use to have a VJ628 many years ago but the cost of printing was getting stupid hence I jumped ship to 7800's - which are now on their way out, eek. I do have a couple of contacts now for a 7800 so will hopefully be able to get another and I'll spend another few hours today trying to take parts from faulty printer number 1 to faulty print number 2 :-)

My apologies I misread and thought you were also looking at 4 colour.

We're in similar situation with artists, not easy to get a decent wide format with more than 4 colours without going much larger.

I find it so odd that there isn’t a 24” sub printer on the market with more than 4 colours. Seems that going super wide format and spending 5/6k+ is the only way

The Sawgrass VJ628 is 24" up to eight colours. About £4k plus vat.

Sorry to hear about your 7800s! For 24" large format printing, consider the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-2100—great color accuracy and supports third-party inks with care. If you're set on sublimation, the Epson SureColor F570 is solid, though more limited with 4 colors and Epson ink lock-in. SubliNova Smart Ink works best with converted printers, so you'd need to check compatibility if moving away from Epson.
