I find what you start with is the one your going to get on with, I use cs3 tried the 5 and because I was so use to the 3 i couldn't get on with it, i love photo shop and find it serves me well
Anyone more user friendly then the other?
if you got ricoh printer then you can go for anything you like as it use powerdriver. If you realy want to userfriendly software then go for something simple like corel photoimpact. i would not call photoshop a user friendly software as learning curve is masive! Photoipact or simillar are simple to use but very powerful. And whats most imporent is cheaper. But if you realy want to go with photoshop route then older versions will be fine if you want to use it for printing. from 6 up.

Having used Photoshop for years it is the industry standard, however most users only use maybe 30% of what it can do, so why pay for 70% of something you are not going to use. Elements 8/9 will do most things at a fraction of the cost of Photoshop. CS 4/5
Elements or Paint shop Pro are both very good but there are also free open source options such as GIMP ( http://www.gimp.org/ ) with loads of support via forums
We have several versions of Photoshop right up to CS4; we use it for everything from screen graphics for HD video to Gicleé work.
- I have 6.0 on my machine here and a few others that are in everyday use; I honestly can't think of anything particularly useful in the practical sense that the later versions do which 6.0 doesn't...
Later versions were only bought in by us as they were bundled with newer versions of Premiere - the video editing software we use - And even THAT is only ever upgraded when an old version won't handle a type of file we really need to use...
Thanks all for the replies.... I am now confident in using Photoshop to a certain dagree... been looking at loads of hints and tips vids on YouTube etc...
If you use CS4/5 Most of the work can be done in Bridge which comes with cs4/5. If you use RAW rather than J peg in your camera Bridge 6.4. So much can be done that sometimes photshop is not necessary. Plus all work done in bridge can be put back to the original image its retrievable so not distructive on your original image.

I use Photoshop and corral draw but find layouts much simpler in corel. The powerdriver with the rhico is v useful.
