We did a quote for Volvo the other day - I was shocked to hear I was miles out with my quote - someone did them for under £1.30 each, full colour, 1000 off. Doing them yourself you aren't going to compete, price wise, against the guys that specialise in large orders.

Good luck with the quote and I hope you get the order.

Hmmm, I would say the opposite, doing them yourself is the only way he will compete if they have another printer. Getting a quote from one of the big ones will leavel no margin if it is that cut throat.

I disagree - your going to tie yourself to this one job, along with half of the family for a good few days, maybe over a week or two depending on whether other jobs come in. The 1000 order would be ok but for the 5000 one i'd definitely farm it out.

If they haven't shopped around for quotes then you might be in with a decent chance to make some money but it would be far less hassle to farm it out and put a cut on top IMO.

If you can outsource, get the job and make a tidy profit that would be ideal. I was just being specific to your example and experience on the Volvo quote..... no room for a 3rd party printer there.

no disrespect John but if i was to do them myself and supply them at 1.50 each for the 1000 order i could still make £650 profit. For the 5000 order knocking them out at say 1.30 per mug would still generate a 2250 pre tax profit. Yes I know it would be an absolute mission to do that many but ive set up 2 different shops in the last couple of months..renovating both from shells. First one took me six weeks , second one took me 2 weeks..and i did all the work myself....im used to big challenges and i can overcome the problems of a huge challenge. Even 650 pretax profit sounds very nice to me at the young stage my business is at. thats near enough a month and a halfs rent for the shop !!

My opinion for what it's worth would be to contract out, this would tie you up for far longer than you'd ever estimate. Make a decent profit by picking up the phone and sending a couple of emails, leave yourself free for all the other jobs you'll be doing! :-)

yeah fair comments...i am nearly 100% sure im not in a bidding war with this one. i think if i give them a decent quote ill get it. It will be interesting to see if i get it and indeed if i outsource the job...ill know by tomorrow which way ill play it when i get these quotes back from the outsourced suppliers

I reckon you'll struggle to get a quote for lower than £1.29 + vat outsourcing.
