    new telephone scam beware

Just had a phone call from BC technical support informing me that they can tell from their server that my computer is infected by a virus. Apart from being suprised at how efficent and clever this firm is that they can tell so readily that my comp is infected i was just a tad supicious and the convo went like this

    me: who are you

them: we are bc tec suport your comp has a virus we can see this on our server we will assist you to remove it

me: but i have anti virus etc

them : ahh but sir this doesnt cover everything

me : ok i appreciate it wont remove the ebola virus or even the common cold but im pretty sure its good for any computer virus

them: no sir we are a gov approved agency you have a virus

me: blimy sounds serious did mr Cameron ask you to ring personally

    them : who?

me: mr Cameron our auspicious leader

Them ; no sir you have a virus you will lose internet as soon as you connect next if you dont accept our assistance we work for BT , VIRGIN , TALK TALK ETC

Me: heck you must be busy

them: what ?.... look sir you have a virus you must let us help you

me: ok sounds serious what you want me to do

    them : please visit www.teamviewer.com

    me: why

Them: our tech guys will help you remove the virus

me; ive heard that before all i got was penicillin

    Them : what?

Me; never mind, look im not going to be letting you into my computer

them: no sir we wont do that we will just talk you through it

Me; but isnt team viewer a remote access website

    Them: no sir

me: according to google it is lucky really as i didnt expect to be able to connect and check as you predicted id have no internet

    Them : silence

Me: look ill ring BT and if they confirm who you are you can ring me back

Them: really sir theres no need just let us help you

    Me: goodbye

    Them:but but but
    brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Just incase you're wondering BT confirmed its a scam, Because people are getting wise to the scam emails they have now changed tactics so beware people they are out there and after your money

I've had a few of these in the past few weeks Brett. It is a big scam as they infect your computer with some hidden software & then charge you around £250 to remove it. I was told this by someone at Virgin Media & he said a few people had fallen for it.

If I get calls like this I ask them for their full company name & address & contact phone number so I can call them back & everytime they hang up straight away.

    Love your telephone patter, purpledragon.

I've read about this kind of thing elsewhere and about someone who kept them on the phone for almost 45 minutes. The phone call was apparently from someone associated with Microsoft who wanted to help him because they'd seen that his computer had a virus. The "victim" was a savvy guy, so he just strung them along. He followed all their instructions, visting websites, but he couldn't get it to work. He made out that he was the thickest tool in the box.

Finally he "managed" to download an .exe file to his computer and was told to double-click it to install the software. He double-clicked it but nothing happened. He told the guy on the phone that nothing happened. The guy insisted that it should and that he should double-click it again. Then right-click it...

...then the victim asked "is it supposed to work on Linux?"

I thought that was so funny. The scammer just assumed that he was using Windows, and even affiliated himself with Microsoft at the start of the call.

Needless to say, the phonecall ended after about 40+ minutes. Hate to think what that cost them.

yep, mum had the call a few days ago, said that its impossible for you to have access to my computer, but if you hold on i will go start it up for you, she then just left the phone for 20 mins and they were gone when she went back.

i guess for the cost of calls if they get a success rate of 1 per 100 calls they are onto a winner
