Digital designs/images into raised stencil/rubber stamp?

    Hi all,
I've been googling myself into a coma the last couple of days trying to find a reasonably affordable way of getting digital designs (black and white line in Illustrator, but pixels if pos) raised/embossed onto A4/5 rubber sheets for use as textures for clay, polymer clay and scrapbooking, not to mention letterpress printing etc. Stencils cut into plastic might work (too thin? I need about 2mm min.) but I would prefer something flexible. Photopolymer is interesting but a bit fiddly and small, thermal copier stencils sound interesting but again, are v thin. So Laser seems to be the best bet, but that might be a bit pricey.
How much is laser cutting onto rubber at that size likely to cost? Anyone here do that sort of thing?
Anyone got any better ideas than me?
Many thanks for whatever insight you can provide. My brain hurts!
    Jon
