Ok, downloads section is now installed and working :-) I'll need to adjust settings and permissions but I'll do this as we progress.

Not to throw a spanner in the works but I read back over the thread and I'm feeling a bit ancy about the whole thing. (not that it makes much difference the way I feel! :) ) No disrespect meant, but what started as a free sharing of ideas and artwork has turned into a system whereby everybody but me is going to be making money from my artwork. (if I submit some!) Somehow seems quite unfair for anyone who uploads something. If that's the case then why would I submit? Or anyone else for that matter? It may be fair enough between friends/fellow-posters, but not to anyone new. If someone is charging for access to artwork I've created then simply put I'd want a cut of that.

I'm not trying to attack anyone over this, just when you step back and look at the concept, something feels a little skew-if.
If there's charging involved then build a site and sell them for 30/40/50p a design so the artist gets something for their work.

Thats where my other idea came in, but more people were in favour of this, then there was a suggestion of maybe minimum 5 uploads for more access.

I think the area will work for the more basic designs but i dont expect anyone to give there best selling design away.

I'm just reacting to what members have asked for in this thread. Of course, I expect members to chip in 5 pages down the line saying they don't think it's a good idea, that's their choice and will therefore choose not to use the section.

Much of the forum is based upon sharing, often with our own competitors and generally we all benefit from this.

I'll hold off investing any more time tweaking this section until I'm happy that enough members want to use it to justify the time and effort I put in.

Sorry I don't mean to hinder the process, I just felt I needed to say how the big picture may look to an outsider. Sharing is fine with me, but I like to share with the person directly and help them benefit directly, that's the joy in it for me. But charging to access work given freely, I would struggle to justify partaking. I'll be keeping my curiosity-eye on how it goes and my fingers crossed for it's success which ever way it goes, and I do hope for its success.

I get the group consensus, which is why I'm not pushing the 'please don't do it' line, not my decision in the end, but I can't help feeling like what it started as was exciting and now feels like a very one sided deal. Worth keeping in mind that if no one will upload decent designs because they'll be free, they you'll end up with a database of mediocre artwork that not many can use. Which restricts non-designers getting the available artwork because they don't have the skillset to design and submit pieces, ending up with a group of the good designers who can get in by submitting work, then only ever sharing middle of the road pieces which none will use because the only people in there are good designers who'll create what they need anyway... does that make any sense?

You've also got the problem with rights of ownership - as soon as they part with it, do they fore fit the right to it? Or can it be retracted from the catalogue? Maybe a deeper analysis of the problems that could occur in the future is worth looking into. I think there's certainly a place for it, but how it operates would be key to keeping everyone happy.

If it sounds like I'm ranting (again), I apologise, I don't mean to. I worry (more for the preservation of friendships/working-relationships in what is a very friendly and constructive forum) that there may develop points of contention in the near future, which are never pleasant.

Just wanted to get that all across, but I promise I'll shut up now as I really don't want to annoy anyone further! :)
    Best,
    J.

Im with paul, i feel that it will help gain more members, and with that comes a better community and a better knowledge base from people, resulting in better forums.

I suppose that settles that then... I'm all for supporting the forum and the users here, but I do hope the new members you get from this don't misconstrue it as a money-making venture.
Looking forward to see how you progress.
    Best,
    John.

I agree with johnny to an extent with the fact that the whole idea of it seems to have gone from a private sharing forum between premium members to what amounts to me like a free to all download section :/ I may well be wrong as its still early for me lol and I am more than happy to share some of my designs and previous work but as one of those that isn't a designer by trade I would think twice before uploading something more for fear of it not being good enough compared to others whose stock in trade is designing.

When this idea first floated I was genuinely excited about the possibility of seeing other peoples designs, not to steal the idea but to get more of an insight into how their mind works. Also as I am just getting into sublimation I feel that it would have been nice to see what sort of designs people put on their mugs & phone cases for example and on the flip side I could upload some tee designs that I have done as that is what I feel my strength is. I create my designs around the fact that I have to vinyl cut it all so they may seem simple to some but I have made sure that I have thought about how the design would weed and press so if someone is looking to get into garment vinyl then it may be of benefit to them.

I do hope that this idea takes off I just have some reservations about how people will see it. Then again I'm very new here so I will shut up now and just see what happens :)
