Personally I would leave offsite ads on as unless your profit margins are so small it should always bring you profit. Obviously then it comes down to if it is enough to warrant your time. But you have a new customer who will hopefully return.

The Etsy ads need to be managed as they can quite easily run up a bill.

Etsy switched on the charges for the offsite ads on May 4th - my bill has gone up a lot too. If your shop has EVER taken more than $10,000 or around £8500 over the course of a year, the offsite ads are compulsory and can't be switched off.

Agree that the Etsy bill / statement is extremely confusing. I worked out that one of my sales (£61) turned into £45 once all the Etsy fees had been taken. That's around 27% fees. If you can't afford to take that out of your profit (on some or all of your sales) you need to increase your prices. Otherwise, obv, you will be running at a loss.

I'm trying to work out how close I can sail to the wind with directing traffic away from Etsy, as frankly I think they are taking the p*ss.

I'm hoping Facebook's new shopping channel thingummy will take the wind out of their sails.

If anyone wants it I have an excel spreadsheet that works out the fees and give you how much profit you get after them

Thought I would give Etsy another go bit with some serious flaws.
How much should I be paying Etsy % is 40-50% about right?

My sales this month are £683 (or $966)
my bill is $406 (or £287 roughly)

I don’t understand Etsy at all and I’m just not feeling it.
I have tried the Etsy ads at a $30 budget to test the water but made one sale of £5.99 so that was a a loss.

Is this about right or am I missing something?

You probably need to study the Etsy forums. There is a lot of discussion about the cost of Etsy ads which apparently can be subscribed to when not wanted and, if your sales reach a limit in a 12 month period are compulsory/

I was very tempted to give them a try but was put off by their special promotion of black owned shops which seemed (dare I say?) racist to me.

Are your sales international or just UK?

International but only letter sized items.

There are a number of places where you can view your fees. Each place gives different figures! The best way is to download the csv of your daily deposits and see what you really earned after all of their fees.
