I'm new to sub printing, having just bought a used sawgrass 500 (cheap).

I'm not intending to start manufacturing coasters, mugs, Ts etc (or maybe for my personal use) but I am interested in using it for other products where it will give me a convenient way to add logos etc.

However I'm finding there's a huge amount of stuff I don't know : not just special techniques but the whole background of materials, possibilities etc. I spent a while on youtube but the videos there seem to be either very basic indeed answering specific problems (like how to change an ink cartridge) or else exotic techniques or hacks that I don't understand the context.

At present I'm looking for the basic user's overview that most of you probably already have from whatever process drove you to get interested - seeing a friend's work, perhaps.

I also like to make things harder for myself by avoiding a manufacturer's intended route - I'd rather use generic or open source utilities rather than a manufacturer's vertical market. Sawgrass were probably a really bad choice from this point of view, but hey, I can dig deep :).
