using templates

Hi, can anyone point me in the right direction for using templates?
I have downloaded some from unisub, but I am ok with embroidery software but rubbish
with anything else I just cant work out how to put the image onto the template (thicko!)
if anyone knows of any good links have googled till my eyes popped! or if anyone would be willing to join my computer on 'show me'
