We have an Epson 9800 purchased 2nd hand.



The print quality is superb. I did consider changing to sublimation but, as AfterMo says, you do need a large format heat press and these are very expensive.

This printer has been used by the firm I used to work for to print templates for signage lettering and for templates for the screens when they were screen printing the vitreous enamel underground signs so it is only coming with a new black ink. Should I go out and buy a full set of Epson inks to get me started and once I know it is up and running have a look around for some deals.
I don't suppose anyone near me in Surrey is about to change their inks and would let me have their near empty carts to try it?

We run a 9600 for sublimation - we do do meterage of fabrics with it, but it works really well for doing smaller things like mugs and coasters too - it's a new workflow to get used to, but the economies of using roll paper and a printer that cuts off the page where your print finishes rather than being restricted to a set ISO paper size is a huge bonus in my mind.
It's a steal at that price - if you get a full nozzle check, and it looks clean inside, then go for it - I would!

I won't be able to do a nozzle check as it has all been emptied. The lines currently have cleaning fluid in them which I will need to empty before moving the machine. Is there anything I need to know before moving one of these. Do the heads need securing in place?

don't empty the lines out, no need.
Remove the waste tank though as that could leak.
The print head should lock into the far right of the carriage
Once you get it to its new home, leave it to settle for 24 hours, and then put your new carts in, and do an INIT FILL (google for this, it's in the service menus) this will dump all the cleaning fluid to the waste tank and refill with what's in your carts.

where is the best place for me to get some normal inks for this machine so i can put it through some nozzle checks and test prints.

Have a look on Ebay, you can usually get Epson carts cheap when they're close to expiry date. Stay clear of none-Epson ink, unless a good brand.
