so that means the printer is basically a throwaway item as the inks cost more than the actual machine
The cost of the toner doesn't make the printer a throwaway item, the cost per page does. The toners for my Samsung cost around £70+ each, but they have enough toner for 7,000 pages. Some Samsung printers have toners costing £40-£50 but they only last for 1,000-2,000 pages - which would be a poor showing for an inkjet, never mind a laser. In comparison, my first colour laser had toners that would do over 10,000 pages per toner - which is ten times the number of prints for some of today's low-end Samsungs but at just twice the cartridge cost.

The cheaper toners typically make for higher cost per page. It's always important to check cost per page, not cost per toner.

These days I've stopped using my colour lasers. When £10 will buy you enough ink for an inkjet that'll last for getting on for 2 years, there's no point to desktop lasers anymore as far as I'm concerned.

inkjets are well more expensive to use in my view.Cartridges hardly hold anything and run out so quickly
I always take running costs of refills into account before buying any printer. As for 10 pound will get u 2 yrs running an inkjet that to me is impossible - you must never use it.
Inkjets caretridges are just as bad for prices and take longer to print than a laser (mono laser even quicker)
The price of toners make the item a throway item as u can just throw printer away and buy same printer with factory half filled toners in it for less than price of full toners.(work that one out)

anyway check this :

Printer ink is one of the most expensive things in the world in terms when you break down how much it costs per milliliter. The price of a new cartridge on a per-gram-of-ink basis exceeds that of pure gold per gram

i have inkjet and use refillable cartridges from corelgraph work fine, i have 2 sets infact, so when i am doing a print run of leaflets, or invoices or whatever i swap the ink over from pigment to cheaper dye ink. i have a B&W lazer printer that i stopped using as the drums & toner units really added up over a year

All I can tell you is that I paid £9.99 for 4 inks of 100ml each, which I put into my Brother printer back in January last year using the giant-size refillable cartridges. I haven't needed to worry about what I've printed because page-cost is as near to zero as makes no odds. A year later and I still have about half of each colour left. So long as the inks don't expire, I won't need to buy anymore until next year.

That's £10 for two years worth of printing. I couldn't manage that on my lasers, even when I bought refills...

That's what happened to me. I saw the cost of the toners, and I knew that the cost of drums and toners would be on me if I kept using the printers. It just made no sense.

I used to spend so much time worrying about ink cost, and whether I could afford to print something and risk the ink running out. But, for the past year, I've just said "print it". Even if the ink was to run out (and it shows no sign of doing so yet), another tenner isn't going to bankrupt me.

I've been considering getting pigment ink for my Brother printers but that's for the future. For now, I use dye ink.

what printer are u using where the running costs are 10 pounds for 2 years as i want one :)
You obvioulsy having to buy refills to top the cartridges up as they have to run out so getting refills inks cost money as well.
My color laser cost 5 per drum from ebay and needed 4 colors - i have printed loads with it and inks still not ran out - infact if it wasnt for the drum marking the paper after a paper jam i wouldnt be looking for new printer

Any Brother printer using LC1100 cartridges will do. You can get large empty ones that hold 100ml/80ml of ink. Just pour in the £10 ink and that's it. Haven't had to top them up for a year and they're still half-full. When you do top up, the refill hole is outside the printer so you just pour more ink in. Doddle.

I do the same as JSR 16.99 for empty cartridges with 400ml of ink, then 9.99 for refills when required on ebay for Epson 4 colour.

sounds good, but shame as i gather thats for mono - im currently lookin for color laser (MFP) where i can get refills inks cheap.I really dont want to pay shop prices for consumables as they through the roof for what they are.
If any sellers on here sell Color lasers (would prefer MFP) with cheap refills let me know as i desperately need to replace my current model.

What's for mono? I've been talking about colour. £10 for 100ml of all four colours, which works out to £2.50 per colour. (And my printer is an A3 model, unlike my lasers).

When I used to do the messy bit of refills for my Samsung colour laser, I bought refills from this company: http://www.refilltoner.com/. Price was fine, but some cartridges can only be refilled so many times. Mine were nearing the limit, so I sought the cheaper inkjet option before I needed to buy some new toners in.

I'd recommend them. If you buy a "starter kit" first, you get all you need in the pack. Later, you can save a little bit more by just buying the toner. Check to see if they support whichever printer you decide to go for.

The only downside with cheap refills is that you'll use the colour laser printer more often. Printing more frequently means those ever-expensive photoconductor units, transfer drums, and fuser units will expire much more quickly - and there's no avoiding those costs beyond chucking the printer and buying a new one again... And again... And again...

Good luck! Let us know which one you decide on. Colour laser printers are a minefield and I'm there are many people who would benefit from any information you discover that makes one better than others.
