I've tried opening boxes before signing before, but couriers won't let me have/open the box to inspect before I have signed for it.

Many companies won't allow you to put "Unchecked" when you sign, if that's the case you need to check the box for any signs of damage whatsoever and if you can't make a note then refuse it as damaged.

i ordered 100 of the large square slates on tuesday and they arrived today but when i saw them in the van all spread out in a empty parcelforce van i thought about this tread and prayed none were broke, i checked 3 boxes before leaving and not one broke even when one of the boxes was half open.

Yeah the box on the top looked like it had been caught on something and ripped open, also when the guy opened the doors on the van and seen in my 5 boxes where spralled across the back of his van in different places so clearly had been getting chucked around while he was driving (i understand they might do but i think couriers should have better system in place for this).
Luckily though none were broken out of the 3 boxes i checked before leaving.
