Surely the programs mentioned above are basically just doing a trace - which is already available in coreldraw - or am I missing something.

No - you are not missing anything. Sometimes it is a matter of translation. Some just may understand the concept of 'conversion' better than 'trace'.

I can't get trace to work in coreldraw, it's greyed out on all file formats

My son even phoned his college lecturer and he had the same problem, didn't know why, so haven't looked at it since, been busy doing other things

Hi Kaz You might have to convert the image to a bitmap before trace will work.
