I think I may have gotten out of bed this morning with a dose of the 'Victor Meldrews'. Visiting my 'pet' forums and having a read through I find myself faced with a profusion of posters using 'of' instead of 'have'. Now as we here are in the business (or maybe merely as a hobbyist) 'of' ensuring things we produce are spelt correctly do we 'have' an inbuilt tendency to feel irritated by grammatical errors and incorrect use of words? The worst examples I find are of/have and brought/bought.
OR
Is it merely time I 'brought' a smart fone nd *ted lernin to txt spk cuz it looks like maybe I shud 'of' konsiderin thu use f krap inglish round theez daze..........?

My biggest pet hate is the lack of commas and full stops that really gets on my nerves particularly when the poster is asking for help with a technical issue thankfully not happened on this forum yet oh hang on

I'm in the unenviable position of having been an editor for many years and, much like the graphic designer who finds himself analysing every font and placement on a restaurant menu, I internally edit anything that I see written down. On social media, this can make for a very frustrating time. I also have to be aware that there are those who many have other reasons for their bad spelling, so I can't run amok pointing out all the flaws. There are days where I genuinely can't stand to look at Facebook because of the sheer volume of laziness from people who I know to be very smart and well educated.
What gets to me most is that the people I have writing for me continue to make the same errors, even though I've spent countless hours mentoring them by using 'track changes' on their submissions and sent over their final edit with clear explanations as to why each instance was altered. Out of the twelve people who opted to have this mentoring, only three stopped making those repeat errors. The greatest offenders were those who used 'then' instead of 'than' (which I'll never understand, as they even sound different), 'brought' instead of 'bought' (tends to be more prevalent as you go further south in England), repeated misuse of 'its' and 'it's' despite being told repeatedly what the proper use is and there's even one guy who still uses 'weather' instead of 'whether' and will always write 'definately' and 'infinate'.
I have to say, though, that I will always remove any instance of 'gotten' even though I understand that there are tense-specific uses of 'forget', 'forgot', and 'forgotten'. For me, it's as bad as British people who end their alphabet with 'zee' rather than 'zed', and I can't abide it.

And don`t forget O (Oh) instead of zero in telephone numbers. My father is ex military, Oh is the number 6 on a telephone and whenever he heard it , it would drive him crazy.
Echo Alfa Romeo Lima, out....
