Thanks for the reply Paul. My budget is not bad I just don't want to put A lot into something I may not like. I will be printing out clock faces to press on to wood blanks up to 3/4in thick. What do you think of the Epson c88x? Thank you BillyG

The Ricoh SG3110 DN is a great little A4 size dye sub printer for the money. The is a slightly more expensive option including the Sawgrass Virtuoso SG400 (tweeked model of the same printer). Some other printers may work, but you will need to rely on third party ink and this is often where peoples frustration and problems start with dye sub technology.
I recommend that you at least start with the sawgrass ink and a compatible printer - you will probably save time, money and your sanity in the short term. You are also much more likely to keep going with dye sub.

I'll 2nd Adrians post.
I nearly bought an Epson when I started but ended up going with the Ricoh SG3110 DN. No worries about clogging etc. Just leave it on and it will self-clean. Sawgrass inks are expensive but will save you time and money in the long run.
Also make sure you use a good paper as this will make all the difference.

The Ricoh 3110DN is excellent value for money. The only issue I can see you having is that you may want to maximise the print area for clock faces and the Ricoh doesn't support borderless printing. You can, however, reduce the borders to a minimum so you 'nearly' get A4 size.
