Anyone got a suggestion for the cheapest way to try out how colour combos / designs will turn out when sublimated, before committing to cooking a mug or coaster?

Just need something flat, cheap and subli-coated...?

I've been using scraps of polyester fabric but they're a bit pernickety and the output doesn't always translate well to glass and ceramic.

Get a polyester bedsheet from a local market or from eBay.

Buy some aluminium sheet from Sublimetals and cut it into smaller pieces for testing.

Thanks - the polyester sheet is a good idea as at the moment I'm using tablecloths... too expensive!

Webtrekker - is aluminium sheet easy to cut? I've got tin snips but usually end up with jagged edges and warped bits of metal... :frown: Is there an easy way to chop it up?

I've managed to cut it on my guillotine before, or you can just keep bending it back and forth over the edge of a table and it soon snaps, it's only 0.5mm thick. It doesn't leave edges as sharp as steel.

For pressing, lie your print on the press, printed side up, then lie your aluminium sheet on the print, coated side down, cover with a teflon, silicone, or A4 paper sheet and press at around 190 - 200 degrees C for around 60 secs. Use very light pressure.
