after being on here a while, i realised why i was not seeing the smilies,

click settings - top right,
left hand side scroll down to general settings
scroll down to MISC settings

• Enhanced Interface - Full WYSIWYG Editing

make sure thats clicked - it was not when i joined, might be now set as the default at join up, but was not when i joined

Lol, yes it has been enabled as default for some time but early followers may well need to check You now have the power.
