Smash Proof Boxes, Really???

I can't get the postage label, customs label, airmail label and address label all on a polystyrene mug box. Add to that and most of my mugs are too big for polyboxes....well that is the end of that.
I have been using airsacs in a box, expensive but one breakage in just over 500 exports...feel much happier.

Every "smash proof" box I have tried has resulted in a broken mug at some stage. Highly annoying as I have to refund the whole cost including postage to the customer.

With the European mugs we buy from PrinterOwners (BMS) then each blank comes wrapped in its own bubble-wrap mug pocket and so we put this back on the mug after sublimation and then into a smash proof box. No issues so far for us if that helps.

I get my polystyrene mug boxes from the manufacturer www.mouldedfoams.com and ask for 'deep mug boxes' these are slightly bigger for the larger handled 11 oz mugs and a bit of bubble wrap does the 10oz mugs the box with 6oz mugs also fits snugly into them and the price is right also -I use the Scunthorpe Branch.

Its a old fashioned thing but I cover the mugs in a plastic bag then I use newspaper to pad out strengthen also helps with no movement in the box. Plus the newspaper is easy to dispose of making the planet slighter greener

As I have just commented I use polystyren however I am with on the 'green'issue,I suggest to my customers to re use the containers as seeding boxes or hand them into the nearest charity shop who can re purpose them as packaging for the mugs or cups they sell.They seem to love them-I had to resort to using these boxes as the cost of replacing broken mugs and postage was getting ridiculas,I am lucky if I get 5 in a thousand.

i have worked in a royal mail sorting office and it doesn't matter if its states fragile on the pack or not.
The way they sort them at the one i worked at was as so... the conveyer belt gets mail dumped onto it by hand and as you can imagine not done lightly or slowly then you have a set number of people per belt sorting the post into different hoppers which are 5-6ft each and usually 1m away from the sorter on the opposite side of the belt, usually 4 hoppers per belt with a 1st class, 2nd class, free returns and international hoppers and sometimes the sorter will overshoot the throw (yes throw) and it will drop onto the concrete behind .

You cannot kick or man handle the post without being spotted so that doesn't really happen on site but the posties are usually dicks who hate their jobs even though they get paid more than electricians and plumbers for doing monkey work and they tend to be dicks with people's mail (yes postie reading this i mean YOU!) and adding fragile to the package is like a red rag to a bull where these muppets are concerned (i have no love for them as you can tell) you are better off adding a chemical bio warning sign if you want it to travel well or be comedic with your packaging it will break up the tediousness of his boring job and make the postie smile then they will then be more careful with your package.

Also my own opinion is that poly boxes with a card outer will ship the best due to the micro bubbles inside the poly structure being more shock absorbing than bubble wrap or card alone and in filling the centre of the mug with scrap paper etc will also stop the mug from vibrating when struck but i don't send singles via post unless it's part of a larger order and i usually wrap the mug in bubble wrap then a garment then more bubble wrap and the postage bag and out of 20 sent this way ive had no smashes (xpress mugs)

True, but your customer would think differently. When your mug arrives broken, having fragile tape exonerates you from blame. I have good success with the smash proof boxes, quick to pack and strong. Had a breakage the other day, but it went into the postal bag first and those collection guys throw the bags about everywhere. Don't put double mug orders into the bag first, the refund is higher if they smash!!
