If you get any Epson inkjet, and get something like InkTec Sublinova, then the costs work out at about £15 per 100ml of ink, so a huge saving on using a Ricoh where there isn't much availability of suitable alternative inks.
The Stylus Pros are a huge step up in quality of printer compared to little Epson home/office models, and you don't have to use the full width of the printer if you don't want to - the 4000 series has a sheet feed that will happily use A4, but there are big advantages to using the sheet feed and then only printing the height of page you need, and then the printer cutting it off.
We started our business with a Stylus Pro 4400, and a year later replaced it with a 7600, and a year after that a 9600 (which we're still using) We get 12 mug transfers across the 112cm width, with each mug transfer working out about 1p due to the above mentioned inks, and 44" transfer paper being much cheaper per metre squared than A4 sheets.

Thank you so much for all this information. I was looking at using the InkTec Sublinova bulk using the refill carts. Do you use the paper roll?

Yes, the 9600 (112cm wide) printers don't have a sheet feed tray so you have to feed each sheet in separately, roll paper works great though- we get 100m rolls, and have our designs laid out in Photoshop to fill the page width.
If you're going for this level of printer, then you should definitely look at getting the ink in its original litre bottles, rather than decanted into smaller bottles, as you'll use around 1/2 a litre of each colour getting the carts filled, and the printer up and running (depending on the size of refill cart you go for, but most are around 250-300ml)

Many thank for your feed back and information. The machine I am looking at comes with 100mls of each colour enough to get me going I think.. What ink are you using?

4880 is a great machine (I am a epson engineer) its a better head than the 9600 and can run BI DI without loss in quality or banding HOWEVER as mentioned its 8 colour and not many do the LLK , youd need to build profiles (i do these if needed) or look at the 4450 which is the same machine but only 4 colour this saves you buying a RIP. I currently have in stock a 4450 which i use myself its a brilliant bit of kit Ive also got approx 120litres of sublinova inks ;)
