Re: Sawgrass print problem.

Getting started and I’ve run into a bit of a problem.

Printing with Sawgrass SG400 using powerdriver in Photoshop and pressing hardboard coasters with Adkins 38x50 press.

Pink and black image below is printed with the magic touch’s own paper. All colours are sharp and vibrant when printed and pressed except for black which has a rough edge to both print and pressing.

Red and black image below is printed on jet stream f35 paper. The left image is printed with magic touch paper and right with jet stream paper. All colours (including black!) printed with jet stream paper have clean edges when printed and pressed but all colours are noticeably weak and lack the vibrancy/strength of colour that is present when using the magic touch paper.

I’ve tried every combination of heat and pressure (and wasted about 20 blanks) but cannot improve the results. In fact results are pretty consistent across a wide range of temps and pressure.

I’ve spoken to Sawgrass who checked the nozzle print results and said they were fine. They are sending a replacement black cartridge to flush through the black channel.

Anyone had experience of this or any ideas what I’m doing wrong?

I've noticed that the MT paper can come out a bit wet on the black ink so I made a new ICC profile for the MT paper. Your ragged edges on the MT paper are due to too much black ink.

Not sure about the dull images with the jet paper though but very interesting comparison.

If using Photoshop, then I'd advise printing to the Ricoh driver and using Photoshop's own colour management with a custom ICC profile made for whichever paper you choose to stick with - the F35 will be fine once profilied.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm new to this and have no idea how to make a ICC profile. Any pointers to a tutorial?

Cheers

easiest and quickest way is to get hold of PAUL, one of the mods on here - he does profiles and will relieve you of a few quid  but worth it, eps if you just starting out

Quick update.

Problem solved!

Turns out it was a paper issue. The Magic Touch paper which I was using was not absorbing the black ink properly. Must say they were great to deal with and when they discovered the problem they replaced paper with tex paper which works great.

different papers work differently, and are no necessarily wrong.
you need to work with the paper, and not use more ink than it can handle, and allow it to dry, and then get an ICC profile made for the paper too, if the one you're using wasn't made for your paper of choice.

TMT Tech guys tested my print file and confirmed they have a faulty batch of their own brand paper. Print works perfectly for them and myself with the tex and truepix papers.

Hi everyone,

we have the same problem, but with the Texprint-R paper. The blacks and dark colors are blurred and smeared. We print from PowerDriver and CS but the result is the same. From the CS is more smeared than from PowerDriver.

Any advice?

Thank you so much
