Can I just add: My daughter has sent out literally thousands of parcels via Royal Mail Signed For (not dyesub stuff) this year and, despite many claims of non-delivery etc, she has yet to receive a single parcel back, even though every parcel has her house number and postcode on.

What happens to all this supposedly undelivered stuff then?

They end up at the Dead letter office!

All "undeliverable" post should end up at the "dead letter office" - a warehouse in Belfast where 300 postal workers sort through 60 million items a year, forwarding them to the correct address or returning them to sender.
Letters that still cannot be delivered are usually held for three months before being recycled "in an appropriate manner".

The big word here is "SHOULD end up at..."

Forget the police reply. If the item is not returned after 15 working days. You tell them that you will file a report with the Royal Mail Investigation Branch who will investigate the theft or loss of your mail. The Investigation Branch will monitor your postal route and keep addresses on file to look for patterns of non receipt in your area. I've seen them in action by the way.

To avoid the scenario where the fraudster goes and picks up the parcel after demanding a refund. Tell them that you can contact their local Delivery Office, who will have a record on their computer and on CCTV, who picked up the parcel in the event that 'someone else' received your delivery card.

Only your original cost of the mug, not the retail value. It's not worth the effort.

Did some googling for the RM Investigation branch.

"The last postman sentenced to death for theft from the post was hanged in 1836, and the
penalty was abolished for such offences in the Post Office Act of 1837, which replaced it with
transportation for periods from 7 years to life.

Lesser offences, such as retaining a letter
delivered by mistake or stealing a newspaper sent by post were punishable by imprisonment
only. In recognition of the seriousness of any offences of tampering with the mail however
the Act specifically gave power to the court to sentence the offender “to be imprisoned with or
without hard labour in the Common Gaol or House of Correction”.It also directed that he
might be “kept in solitary confinement for the whole or any part of his imprisonment”.

Wish we still had similar offences for customers lying about non receipt of mail....bloody liberals.

Ravi, if you are a business seller you can claim back the cost of postage, and the trade cost of the item, which RM need to see proof of, the best thing i can think of for mugs is to give them a trade price you charge other customers for, so you can claim for the cost of the mug plus the cost of time/material/packaging of the item. if you sell for £6.99 you cannot claim £6.99 unless you are a private seller.

Its definitely tougher with INR claims this time of year. The Royal Mail investigation line does work. Saying that Ive had INR claims and I have a copy of their signature on the Royal Mail website showing delivery 2/3 days prior to their INR claim.

Some of them claim so much they dont know where they are upto.

chatted with our postie at length yesterday he has been at his depot for 28 years, since he took a summer job during a visit home at UNI !!!!! they have 22 staff there, they are trying to get it down to 26 part time - yep he said when i looked puzzled, the actual number of staff they should have is 42 !! they want part time flexible workers, who will all take a van out, with those big push a long trolleys and deliver parcels as well as post, so the guy who normally takes out the parcels will be gone, right I said, so what happens when you have 3 before 9am signed for things, at opposite ends of our town? right he said, i have to drive round in the van deliver those, then get back to being a postie walking the streets - we both just shook our heads.

Huge pension deficit, trying to get the books to balance.

We have that already. Our postie drives around in a van, drops off the pre 9am & pre 1pm and larger than postbox items, then gets his bag and walks round the houses and streets delivering normal post house to house then gets in van and goes back to the depot. Two to a van, two to an area that is around 1000 or so houses.
