Flat Placemats - Hopefully a solution

Got a +100kg vintage nipping press delivered today (way bigger than I thought it would be mind!) for the sole purposes of flattening placemats as the things, like everyone no doubt, drives us mad trying to get them flat. With a few staff then it really is a no no to have heavy boxes all over the studio floor due to 'elf and safety.

So, my back is now killing me having managed to get it to the perfect position on our studio floor (thankfully about 2 foot from the outside door it came in from).

I have four 28x28 Unisub placemats just cooked and now in the nipping press (which may get the name of Michael after Michael Flatley - customer suggestion!).

So come tomorrow we shall see how they are and if perfect we will up to 10 in the nipping press and then will see about more.

Any more nipping press names welcome before the official naming ceremony Friday afternoon with a coffee and biscuit.

Hopefully if this works it may give some others a solution to this problem.

Flat. As. A. Pancake. Even after two hours. Will experiment to see the shortest time. With an order of 400 placemats just in from one person this nipping press has come at the most perfect time.

I'm looking at printing placemats but the thought of sorting out bowing is putting me off slightly. Did you find this is a reliable solution over time - does the nipping press relieve the bow completely? How long do they need to be in the nipping press for and presumably they go in warm?

We use multiple nipping presses and leave boards (hardboard we don't do cork) in them for 24 hours and they come out perfect. We use thick cardboard inbetween each board and depending on size of nipping press and size of placemat then we can often do two next to each other. Although investment for each one was initially £300-£500 they certainly have paid for themselves over time and meant no one is tripping over heavy boxes as originally use to place them on the floor.

I no longer do placemats because of the warping.
I was putting them under breeze blocks piled high for extra weight and never got a flat one.
I don’t have room for a nipping press so not really an option for me.

What was the final name outcome?
