Re: Newbie question about Brother MFC-5910DW
Only issue I have had is with curled paper being a bit difficult to get to feed lol but that is not a printer issue just my bad transfer paper. You can print without an icc profile (I do) however I do need an icc profile doing myself as certain colours are odd to say the least lol. Always remember that if you are not certain about whether sublimation is for you then the much cheaper Epson S22 printers and refillable cartridges might be something to consider. As far as I am aware Viking Direct offer a similar warranty to PC World at maybe a cheaper cost, I definately remember buying some extended no quibble warranty from them when I bought mine.

Thanks so much for all the very helpful replies.
I bought the printer today and the refillable cartridges are on the way. I am just about to buy the ink so I need to get my ICC profile sorted now. Hopefully after all the tips and advice it wont be too hard to set it all up.

To be blunt & honest this is the worst bit of advice anyone can give someone who is new to sublimation. You only have to look at the number of posts from new members new to sublimation who say 'I've bought an Epson S22' & then the replies which explains why they should be going down the supported route. It really is time some of the lesser experienced members stopped telling new members you can do things on the cheap with little or no experience. Some of you wouldn't be using an unsupported printer if it wasn't for all the free advice from others such as Jonathan who had used his own skills & experience to pass onto yourselves. I just feel that credit should be given to where credit is due.WorthDoingRight;52726 wrote:Always remember that if you are not certain about whether sublimation is for you then the much cheaper Epson S22 printers and refillable cartridges might be something to consider.
Re: Newbie question about Brother MFC-5910DW
It is the end users choice of the end of the day what printer they decide to use, and which inks, papers etc ... whatever they choose, we can decide to offer them advice or not - the people deciding to go the DIY route do ask for help, yes, but so do people with supported printers and inks. There are people out there who are happy to pay more money and have something that they know is just going to work, and there are people who would rather save some money and enjoy learning how to put something together and make it work themselves (maybe with a little help and advice) Going this latter route is different maybe from the way some people see as the 'normal' way of doing things, but that doesn't necessarily make it wrong. And the ones going this route, although may take some time to get set up, in the end, they will know a lot more about their system and how it works, and then can be someone else on this forum (and elsewhere) being able to offer advice and support to newbies, and the people with the official/supported systems when they run into problems. You have to remember that there was a time when the idea of a sublimation printer didn't exist, but there were people who saw the potential in the idea and experimented with whatever printers that were available and some disperse dye mixtures until they found a workable solution - without people like this there wouldn't be a forum here, and a lot of the people here today would not be in this business.

Re: Newbie question about Brother MFC-5910DW
Well IanM, in todays age how can I justify telling someone who is already looking to go down the unsupported route that there is not a cheaper route even still?
I have the Brother 5910 but really there are not many jobs that require A3 sublimation unless you are going to use A3 sublimation onto Polyester shirts. (Total cost of £117 with refillable cartridges)
I have also bought an Epson S22 + refillable cartridges (the total outlay for these 2 items came to £28.49 delivered).
Yes, if you want a supported nothing to think about route then buy a Mac (oops Ricoh printer) and forget about the Brother/Epson. If however you do not want to end up with an expensive redundant machine (if you give up quickly) or like me just like to tinker then the advice I gave was correct in reply to this thread.

Re: Newbie question about Brother MFC-5910DW
Let's assume that someone going down the route of an unsupported printer, may also choose to use un-Sawgrass ink, and not be forking out so much money for the ink side of things.Ian M;52782 wrote:You seem to have forgotten £240 for the ink
