Messenger Bags and Vinyl

First of all, sorry for all the questions - I did Google this and I searched on the forum too.

I don't know if any of you read reddit (I don't, but my colleague pointed this out as it may be of interest)

Basically, an American fella wanted to put a nerdy gaming logo on a messenger bag. It was suggested to him to do it in fabric paint with a stencil.

The first thing that came into my head was "Vinyl would be the best thing". Single colour etc.

However, I wonder about how hardy vinyl would be on a messenger bag that takes knocks etc. It's one thing on a t-shirt, but would it not peel/crack on a bag?

I got discussing it with a few people and if it's good, I could get some orders out of this.

What do you reckon?

Standard sign vinyl would not adhere properly however Grafityp supply a product made by Siser that is heat press applied. It is a stretch vinyl for printing as it only comes in white. It is called 'C print PU' and is printed with eco-slovent inks on something like a versacamm. Durability and flexibility is excellent.

That sounds like the stuff. I generally use MDP though. I was wondering how hardy hotflex is or as someone suggested Digital Flex (used without printing on)

I would not use C-Print for this but C-Print PU as this is very stretchy, harder to weed but the end result is better IMHO.


Also, Siser sell a heat transfer film called Smart-Pro. I have never used this but the blurb states...

"to be applied on Siser digital products printed with eco solvent based inks to protect from abrasion and discolouration"

Now I have never had the use for it so not sure what its like, but it seems that this might help.

Good spot sg.....correction made. Yes it's the PU I use along with TTD transfer film as recommended to me by the Grafityp guys at the Printwear and Promotion show. It is good stuff, prints well and for a vinyl feels pretty good. It is easy to use....well it must be if I can do it...haha

How do you get on with weeding the PU Roger?

I normally use just plain old C-Print and it weeds lovely. Got 20 meters of the PU in to try and have already thought that weeding this is going to be a pain. Not had too much of a play with it just yet but any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I find weeding is no better or worse than any other vinyls I use though I did faff around with different blade pressures. Now I just make sure I have a good blade in my versacamm and it's good to go. I also use the TTRH or THT profile in Versaworks as recommended by Grafityp which they say is the best profile to use. Most of my vinyl is from Grafityp though I do have a large stock of from various suppliers (bought a job lot from a shop closing down)so across that range of materials I find they are all about the same. My biggest problem is the old eyesight isn't what it was so doing the real small bits is a pain.

Other than Ralawise, does anyone know any suppliers for bags? People like this won't touch me because I'm running a small cottage-industry rather than a full blown ltd company.

I'm in the same situation as you and had no problems ordering from Ralawise. Once when I was low on stock and needed just 2 specific t shirts and I got them no problem.
