Re: Turn 7in x 5in Photo in to a large Laminated Vinyl Print High Quality

Post by Andrea »

Hi Everyone. I have being asked to quote a customer on transferring this 7"x5" old photo in to a laminated Wall Print. It has to go as a backdrop in a new shop on a back wall. I have seen something similar recently but the print was best viewed from a few feet back, as the print on close inspection has spaces between the dots/pixels . Can the attached photo be changed in to a vector and printed as a high res print with similar detail to the 7x 5 print. Question is what is the best way to make it a high quality 7foot x 5 foot print . Where can I get the photo transferred to adobe Illustrator and what would it cost and how long. Any advise would be appreciated. Regards Andrea.

Hi, I have created an illustrator ai file with the image vectorised. You can download it from here save the file and open it with illustrator. the objects are grouped so you
can resize it to whatever size you like.
Hope this helps.

Hi Davidder
Thank you very much. I am not familiar with illustrator, so will get on Adobe Tv/youtube to get the basics.
I am sure that I can get some local signwriter to print on vinyl.
Regards Andrea.

NO. You can convert it to vector as davideer did but thats got nothing to do with enhancing quality. vectorised file will be terrible and nothing like original so as you mentioned, it would look half descent if you few foot away of it.

In this case your best bed would be some software that will add some extra pixels to make it larger.
no perfect but better then vector.

The best way is with a piece of software called Perfect Resize, it used to be called Genuine Fractals in the old days and is very very good at making little images BIG!

They do 2 versions these days, a stand alone only version and a series of plugins for photoshop/lightroom/aperture along with the standalone software. http://www.ononesoftware.com/products/perfect-resize/

Just to correct that statement the new illustrator cs6 gives an almost original trace of the image so the file I have created will be the same as the photo but can be scaled to any size.
If you want to check download the file and have a look the results from cs6 have been amazing so far. I have used genuine fractals for many years and it does give excellent results however it does nothing to obviate the lpi problem of scanned images and the consequent graininess caused by the dot reproduction of litho prints. For newbies it is also a bit complex to start with.
I had no idea you did not use illustrator maybe if you take your file to a local print firm they can open it and resize accordingly.

with respect... I think i have to correct your statement.
i never see bad quality raster image that was vectorised to vector with this same quality. I understand principle of vector and have seen some good once in my life but not raster images.

i understand that Andrea is trying to enlarge this photo so here it is example (3x zoom) of as you stated
will be the same as the photo

you might be better using something like 'rasterbator' that will turn the image into varying sized dots. it will then have a different 'quality' - but will produce an interesting image effect from a few feet away. it is free to use too here: http://rasterbator.net/
