Re: Anyone recommend a good Pigment Ink based printer

I am looking to purchase a "Pigment Ink" based inkjet printer as opposed to a "Dye" based system.

A4 size is adequate enough for my requirements

Any suggestions are welcome

Cheers

Are you looking for a printer that comes as standard with pigment ink, or a printer which is suitable to use with a 3rd party pigment ink (or sublimation ink?)
What size of printer are you wanting?
Is it to print on paper, canvas, both, or other.
What is your budget?
How many colour channels are you wanting?

I would prefer one that comes with standard inks as I have had a few bad expeiences of using 3rd part bulk ink supplies
Will be used to print 99% of the time on paper and inkjet transfer paper.
Budget is al low as I can get it for as I have an office full of printers !

Have been looking at a Canon Pixma MG3250 but cant't see if it is a pigment or dye based unit. I have written to Canon for clarification

Epson T0715 The Cheetah inks all Pigment, you`ll just have to find a printer that uses that ink

As luck would have it I already have a printer which uses Cheetah inks, an Epson 120D. Unfortunately this is set up for Subli. printing!

I have been using the Kodak series of printers and they all use pigment ink. The advantage is the low cost of the cartridges and the photo quality seems very good. Unlike my Epson 300 and 360 (which gave a low ink warning every time I switched it on) the ink lasts a good while as the cartridges are a reasonable size and cost around £18.50 for either black or colour. You can pick one up for around £30 if you scour the net. I bought mine at Tesco for £29.99 but they have sold out I think.

HI, Thanks for that., never thought of Kodak as I have been exploring Epson/Canon & HP printers.
Thought I had it sussed with a Canon 3250 but it seems that only the black ink is pigment based, the colours are dye based.
What model(s) Kodak do you use?

Hi sorry been busy. I originally purchased an esp c110 multifunction printer which is still going strong. Then I bought an esp 3.2 from amazon. Although Kodak aren't making printers at the moment the inks will be available for abut 4 more years. They printer is slowww but the photo quality is very good. the top of the range for the home market was the hero 9.1 but it's hard to justify paying over £100 for a printer that isn't made any more.
The only way round the problem would be a ciss/refillable system for an existing printer and bulk ink but they have troubles of their own. I am presently using refillable cartridges for my brother sublimation setup and have had none of the problems I had with ciss on the Epson 1400 which I am now dumping as the paper feed has gone west (gosh I miss my 1290). To be honest I did find that compatibles for all my Epson printers from the 760 through to the 1400 all had a distinct magenta shift. So where possible I switched back to genuine for photographic print. So I can see where you're coming from. I have been using Epsons since 1989 and have a lot of experience with them but over the last few years, because of the high ink usage and cost, I have explored many other avenues such as HP and canon. So I now use the brother 5890cn for sublimation up to A3, the Oki c830 laser for t-shirts, the zebra stripe s600 for labeling, the Kodak for photos and the Epson 9800 for fine art Giclée printing amongst other things. But if you buy a cheap Kodak and give it a whirl it will only have cost you £50 including the ink. amazon have an esp c110 for £20 so perhaps you could give it a try.

Also here is a list of many wide format pigment ink printers if your pocket is that deep.

plenty of epsons that use the full durabrite inks, just avoid any that take the clara home inks or the one with the pen symbol, as the black in that is not durabrite, i went on epson website and looked at their models (old and new) our local argos clearance outlet sells them, with warranty but no ink carts,

We use a PX720WD which originally came with Claria inks, but added a CISS and pro level pigment inks (intended for wide format printers) and get excellent results with some custom ICC profiles.
