Hi Dave
I have the thick (about 10-15mm) base pad but this is covered with a teflon sheet and then the top platen also has a teflon sheet covering it. I have always done this to protect the surfaces of the machine plus the thin teflon sheets can be easily cleaned by removing and washing. Tape the top one on the sides with lots of heat resistant tape.
Its also quicker because when pressing garments you should always cover your garment with a teflon sheet to protect the garment from marks on the platen or base pad. if they are stuck in place you do not need to.
The below is what I am referring to:

Slate with marks on it.

Re: Slate with marks on it.
I always use a silicon sheet when doing slates so that isn't a solution to this problem. I have also tried baking sheets so this doesn't help. It isn't that there is anything on the base that can mark it, it seems to be a pattern in the metal. I haven't even had a great many things through the machine, so it can't be an issue of wear and tear. If I can, I will try to get a photo of it, but I'm not sure if it will show up.
Thanks for the suggestions though.

How very odd, and incredibly annoying. I feel for you on this one.

Re: Slate with marks on it.
Finally got around to testing a slate from a different supplier and it looks good, no marks. Going to email original supplier and ask for his comments. This has cost me time and money, so not pleased at the moment.

And breathe. I know where you are coming from though.
It is nice to resolve something even if you would rather not have the problem.

Yes, you are so right. It seems it was the product and not me, so I can at least get back to printing some for my long suffering customers.

Re: Slate with marks on it.
I have received some substitute slates from the original supplier to try out, so hopefully will get a better finish this time. Will let you all know how they go. Thanks for the help from my supplier too, he has been extremely helpful in all of this.
