Black mug printing shows brown

Hi all

I am sure that this has been seen before but I have tried a few suggestions from this forum with limited success, my problem is that my Black mugs all have a brown tinge to them, from what I have read on here this could be down to over cooking? so I have reduced my time and temp as shown on another post, my set-up and times are shown below, any thoughts of what else I can try?

Ricoh SG-3110DN
PowerDriver-v4
Sublijet R inks
True Pix paper (Printing on the white side)
PixMax mug press

Settings that I have tried:-

Idle temp (120c) 248f – Press Temp (190c) 374f – Time 140 seconds
(This is giving a dark brown, almost black appearance to the mug but is fully printing to the bottom)

Recommended settings from another post.
Idle temp (110c) 230f – Press Temp (170c) 338f – Time 120 seconds
(This is giving a very brown appearance to the black and is fading out to the bottom of the mug; we only print 4 mm above the bottom)

If I use my ricoh with sawgrass inks I do idle temp 155, press temp 170, for 170 seconds. BUT do your mugs stay brown or do they cool back to black?

I ask because I have had mugs that come out slightly brown, look at them in the morning when fully cooled and they are black!

I wait till the mugs are cool and they are almost black but still have a hint of brown in them, at the lower temperatures and times they are a mottled brown even when cooled

I had to think about that! No not found an alternative for the Ricoh. I use the Ricoh for internet mug orders where the orders all vary. it is loaded up with pre-trimmed paper hence, open order, print, wrap, press, paperwork, pack a previous mug that is now cool and repeat.

Everything else including bulk mug orders goes through the other printer.

I too have suffered this! Black mugs have caused me no end of trouble but I have two customers who regularly order their logos on black mugs so I have stuck with it. I found that by pre heating the mugs first has helped though and the last one I did was absolutely spot on with the colour. Not printed one since so haven't had chance to test whether this works every time

i have had this too. ive watched videos and times vary. whos right i dont know. ive done my mugs at 200 degrees for three minutes and come out ok (i think) but the black is the problem colour on mine but could be over cooking. not sure but the other colours were fine. but the black did turn better when i put under cold water after it cooled a bit.

I realise that this thread is old, but being a relative newbie, I can't help but wonder why you would want to print black text/graphics on a mug that's already black?
