Pigment Ink Silly Question

Hi, my knowledge on printing is very little but I am trying to learn more, I have mostly only done the vinyl cutting type stuff. Anyway can I ask what use pigment ink has for commercial use, from what I gather (I'm probably wrong) is that it fades after a while so can it not be used for outside signs,banners etc, also would the likes of canvas printing fade indoors. I have been using it lightly for t-shirt printing. I get the Sublimation printing idea, I think Solvent is the best for signs etc but unsure how far you can go with Pigment. Can someone give me an idea of what can be achieved with a large format pigment printer. (Solvent is out of my league).
