Re: Embroidery Machine - Believed Ebay scam - BEWARE

Post by Ali P »

Hi Folks,

I will update later as pushed for time at the moment but please note if anyone is looking at/bidding on a Baby Lock BMP9 embroidery machine, ebay item number 271657581632 be very wary as I do not believe it to be genuine and have reported it to Ebay.

The seller (who is probably not the account holder) is offering a buy it now price on another email address, which results in an email sending you an invoice requesting a bank transfer which is purportedly from ebay. I can confirm that the invoice is not from ebay and their advice is not to transfer any funds.

The seller comes across as genuine, it is his wife's machine, he can't use his paypal account at the moment because he sold a car and put too much money through it, blah blah blah.

However, points to note:

The photo has not been taken in this country (see continental plug socket).
The account is little used (so it's owner is possibly unaware it may have been compromised)
The email address he has put as a photograph may not relate to the ebay account holder (I can't check this)
The buy it now which he is so keen to promote is not "buy it now" on the listing
The price he quoted was four figures, but still an apparent bargain
When you contact him he makes a point of pushing the ebay trusted rules etc so you think he is quite properly progressing with a sale through ebay
He asks for your name, address, phone number so Ebay can send an invoice & he can post
The invoice arrives from an address that ebay have since confirmed is not genuine
The invoice asks for a bank transfer
After he has sent that, he telephones you to hurry you along (he has been stalled)
He has even sent a copy of "his" British passport , the photo on which is most definitely not a match to the voice on the phone.

I'm not posting this for any reason other to protect other people. I was ultimately not taken in but I would guess that I am one of many who have had similar initial correspondence with this person since yesterday. It is a short term listing, if all those who enquire are given a four figure buy it now and do actually proceed, it'll be days before they realise by which time he will be long gone.

Ebay are aware, but surprisingly the listing is still open and sitting with bids - They assured me their fraud team would be onto it.

As I say, this information is for your protection, make of it what you will and make your own judgements

We've had similar happen in the past with high priced items of machinery on Ebay- genuine seller, but another person emails an invoice/offer to purchase because the 'sale fell through' ... actual seller completely unaware, except that the auction itself is won by someone who doesn't want to go through with the sale (twice!), no doubt this is the scammer who then emails the fake invoices - how he got our contact details for this is unknown. In the end, after stringing the scammer along for a bit, purchased said machinery from actual seller directly with no problems.
Things aren't always as they seem, yours does sound different to our experience though.

Yes I've heard of a similar scam to that mentioned by Pisquee before - a clever one. This one must have started at the listing stage, as the email address given is within the listing (as a photo) so "7945lorna" who doesn't seem to use her ebay account very often, is probably blissfully unaware of the listing in her name! I really hope ebay has made contact with the various bidders by now and alerted them. It is my misfortune that the scammer now has my email addresses to pass on to his scamming mates but at least he didn't get my money. I certainly would have liked the machine though.

Wow - well spotted Laura! The giveaway is the opening quote! I wonder how many more accounts he has grabbed - is this one something you have already reported to ebay?

no i had not reported it, i was looking at the link you posted and it came up at the bottom - people also looked at, and i saw the text was exactly the same - what a crook, as you have reported the one, perhaps you can let ebay know there are multiple postings, their software will search for everything with that description

I have reported it :) The other one is still attracting bids but I have been tied up trying to locate the owner of the passport he has probably stolen. Reported to the Police but I have been googling to find the bloke myself ;) I've got work to do...but am like a dog with a bone now!

Scammer has now happily given me an address from where I can collect and pay cash - Banchory near Aberdeen would you believe it.

Thought I'd have a look at the listings you are talking about.
I remember seeing something like the 2nd pic - the one with email details in - yesterday. It was on a large format printer - can't find it now tho.
Hiding the details in a pic means all his listings are harder to track down - so take care everyone.
