Re: Ricoh sg3110dn keeps going offline

Post by MREDD »

Hi All

I am not as techie as I suppose I should be so I will explain this the best I can.

I have an SG3110DN on my network which is wired by Lan into a Virgin Media hub. It works fine for a week or two & then goes offline. Try as I might the only way to solve it is to delete the printer & then re-introduce it by installing the drivers again.

Sawgrass cannot explain why this keeps happening, anyone know why?

TIA

you are probably using automatic IP addressing (known as DCHP) this will happily change the address when the router reboots, the printer is turned on and off etc.
Set the printer to a static IP address through its menus, see your network guy for a suitable IP address. Then install as an network printer or set the new IP address in the ports part of the printer properties.

This should stop the network loosing the printer.

You might get on better with a separate router with your devices plugged into it rather than the Virgin box.

I have found Virgins routers to be unreliable and regularly have to restart it as it has frozen or wont connect to the internet etc. Restart and everything is running again.

A router will do the job but it will be easier to use a network switch such as:

A 5 port version is available. This requires no setup and any port can go to any device. All my networks connections are attached to this unit with a single cable going to the Hub. The switch works differently to most routers as it sends data only to the device that needs it rather than broadcasting to all channels. This allows several high speed devices to communicate at once without significant reduction in speed. Whether this has any real effect on your printer depends on the port speed but at least you don't have to worry about hardware slowing things down. A router is unlikely (check) to have switch capabilities. The switch also has diagnostic led's on each port so you can see if the connection is functioning and also the speed 10/100/1000 which is selected automatically.
