VAT invoice. Can I send one?

I've just got a new customer. Have sent an invoice for payment as I have many a time to business's. This one has asked for a VAT invoice. As a sole trader and not registered for VAT can I send one?

No, it is against the law to issue a VAT invoice without having a current VAT registration number.

Thanks. Thats what I thought but just double checking.

As you are not vat registered there is not vat to add to your invoice and so there is nothing for them to reclaim. Just invoice them as you normally would but tell them first that your not vat registered in case they think your price has reclaimable vat.
